Virtual Reality in VICs

Through the Outback Tourism Infrastructure Fund, the Tourism Group partnered with The Queensland Government to bring virtual reality experiences to the accredited visitor information centre network. Eleven VICs were successful.

The VR project was aimed at assisting regions to promote extra activities and experiences to visitors to encourage extended length of stay to those who might not have considered staying on or visiting such places within the region.

The project included the following for participating VICs:

  • A professionally filmed 2 x 360 degree 3 – 5 min film, shot in the region with the VIC’s choice of subject e.g. – Spectacular gorge, inside a Museum, a Stagecoach ride, Historical village.
  • Installation of the VR headsets (2 headsets) complete with the technical equipment required which the VIC would subsequently own.
  • A 360-degree camera that can be used to create extra content if desired.
  • No additional items are required to set up or use the experience
  • No ongoing costs unless VICs want extra/different films
  • Training and support
